Tis the reason why Cleveland fans are still laughed at... Art Modell deserves to be in the hall of fame due to his improvements for the NFL as a whole. -The Glavin I'm sure you're a nice guy and all, and I really hate to say this to a fellow TAGger, but ...... don't tell be anything about Cleveland fans or what Modell should or shouldn't get. I was there, I lived it. Football died the day that Modell ended his temper tantrum and moved my Browns. I couldn't bring myself to watch a down of football until Cleveland was allowed to field "their" football team at the Hall of Fame game in '99. It was like Hollywood pristine, surreal feeling seeing them again. As far as Modell goes..... sure, he puppet-ed Rozelle into some things that furthered the NFL, but he did it at the cost of one of sports' greatest franchises. I assume you know nothing of Cleveland football other than the expansion era Browns, but Cleveland was the epitome of championship football in the 40s and 50s chief. The team that took the field in 1946 in Cleveland drove the defending NFL champions across the United States. Did you know that? Know why? Because of a guy named Paul Brown. He was so revered and respected that there was no other choice for the name of the expansion team that he was to pilot other than his name, the Browns. He was also a modest man, so when asked why the team took the name, he said it was in honor of Joe Louis. So, Modell, years later, takes ownership of this elite franchise and slowly drives it into the ground, slowly screwing Cleveland via their own die hard loyalty. At the same time, he felt it necessary to screw the Indians fan base. How? By screwing them out of their concessions money at Municipal Stadium. He did this for decades. When the cavs decided to move downtown (from Richfield), they were to build a new venue, along with the Indians. When Modell caught wind of this and he knew he'd no longer have a strangle hold on the Indians revenue, he threw a temper tantrum and demanded the same deal at the Tribe's new venue, they told him to pound salt. So, like a spoiled brat, he pouted, and took his football away. Except it wasn't all his to take. We fought to keep our name, colors and history. Name another time in professional sports that's happened. With the exception of the Packers, no team in professional sports belongs more to a city than the Browns to Cleveland. In my opinion, there's a few fan bases that come close to the Browns', the others are just observers of a sport....not fans. I don't expect you to understand that, because you're not from Cleveland, and that's fine. But, because of that, there's not a chance in hell you're gonna tell me ANYTHING about how Cleveland sports fans are, sorry.
