Creating a new website

Just curious if anyone knows any decent free 'create your own website' links? I know there is Google Sites for one as an example. The purpose is to advertise a business (for my mom) and services type of site. I'm also suggesting to create a Facebook page as well.
Also, how do you get in the google search results? Is that a paid thing or something to do with how you code/build your site, etc?
Thanks so much in advance. I'm a NOOB.

For Google: Once you have a website up, it will be searchable after a while, not sure what a while is though (day, week?). You need to take ownership of it via Google Places, the more info and pics/vids you have, the more likely google's big machine will think its legit.
You can use google Adwords to attract people to your site as well, it's decently effective if you do it right and trackable. This is a cost per click thing, but you can set a nice low budget to start it off. I think most of my new client calls are coming from this these days. it has a decent tutorial as well.
Facebook: is free, easy, and depending on the type of business, Very effective. It's easy to start by getting your own friends to like it and see if it builds up in 'likes' from there. I usually just post the stuff that helps build some relationship and personality to the business, it helps people genuinly be interested in what you post. Every 5 or 6 posts you can do something informative of you biz and I usually do some sort of promo every 10th or so. If you FB Foreman Auto Service, you can see how I post.
Can't give you much info on websites, I'm about due for an update myself. The best thing I know to do these days is have things like FB and youtube videos along with other active things going on to make sure you're first page on Google ( a necessity btw).
Theres more info about how to take advantage of micro search engines, but to wait after a while once the initial is established.

A natural right is an area of individual human behavior -- like thought, speech, worship, travel, self-defense, privacy, ownership and use of property, consensual personal intimacy -- immune from government interference and for the exercise of which we don’t need the government’s permission.

Does your Mom's business have a physical address and does she do business face to face? Those are the requirements for Google Places and also for other sites like Yelp, CitySearch, and others. What kind of business is it? Sometimes there are other specific customer review sites that can be used to help with web presence.
In terms of getting into Google, it's a bit of a crapshoot. Like P4 said, make sure to take ownership of your online presence immediately. Getting a business facebook page that links to the website is a great start. There are people who can definitely help you, Pachuco is a good start since he won't BS you. Many SEO consultants will promise you the #1 spot on google which sounds great, but generally it's for some crazy specific keyword no human would ever use. So getting into Google means different things. If you're an Italian Resturant, you ideally want to be on the front page when someone types "italian restaurant city, state" since that's a common way to look for places. You also want to make sure your website shows up when you search for the business name directly. So there are a lot of considerations. It's a combination of the words you use on your page as well as special tags that are aimed at the search engines. Again, more in-depth technical stuff than you probably want to talk about at this point.
Happy to help more if you need it, good luck!
